CRITICAL INCIDENT REPORT 1 FOR BARBARA ANNE’S STORY

Situation 1: Tray, our boss, has the habit of nicknaming everyone and using those nicknames during team meetings. I never liked having a nickname because I thought it unprofessional and demeaning. As I walked down the hallway, and he was coming from the other direction, he addressed me using his nickname for me. I felt the need to correct him right then, so I stopped to share my preference that he use my actual name, not a nickname. The behavioral exchange is next.

Behavior 1: I said, “Tray, my name is Barbara Anne Fowler, and I prefer to be called Barbara Anne.” Tray attacked in a loud voice with, “I will call you anything I want, Fowler. In fact, I will call you ‘Fowl’ today and anything else I want tomorrow.”

Consequence 1: I felt verbally abused, humiliated, embarrassed, and diminished in front of several people in cubicles. From that moment on, I have not received a kind word or any positive reinforcement from Tray for my work. On the contrary, for the rest of that day and the next two days after that, Tray found any excuse he could to come by my work area to use the nickname, repeating it over and over again, with a louder voice each time.
